2 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Home's Water Well Pump

Business Blog

Lately, you may have noticed that the water coming out of your faucets seems delayed or starts to sputter as the stream starts. Because you depend on a well for your home's water supply, you may be wondering whether or not there is a problem with the pump. If so, look for the following signs that the water well pump is failing and it may be time to have it replaced.

1. Water Pressure Decreases as It Travels Further Away From the Well

One sign that your well pump is getting ready to fail is when you start noticing a difference in the water pressure within your house. If your kitchen is closest to the well, you may see that the pressure is fairly consistent with what it has been in the past. However, as the plumbing goes further away from the well, such as a bathroom toward the back of the house, you may find that the water pressure decreases significantly. It may even come out as only a light stream or trickle.

If this is the case, the pump's motor may be wearing out and is unable to fully push enough water to supply your home. Or, the pump casing is cracked, allowing air to contaminate the water and interfere with the pressure. Either way, the pump will most likely need to be replaced.

2. Clicking Noises Are Heard Whenever the Pump Is Running

Another sign that it may be time to replace your water well's pump is when you start hearing clicking noises whenever the pump is running. At first, this sound may not be loud enough to notice. However, as the problem worsens, you may be able to hear it whenever you are in the vicinity of the well.

If you are hearing the clicking, the most likely cause is that the air bladder within the pump has either cracked or broken off. Since the bladder contributes to the amount of force the water is pushed through the pump and your plumbing, a problem with the bladder may warrant a pump replacement.

If you are unable to get consistent water pressure throughout your home and/or you hear clicking noises as the pump tries to push water through it and into your house, you may need to replace the pump soon before it fails completely. Contact a company that offers residential water well pump services to have them check your old pump and discuss your options for replacing it with a new one if they determine that it is necessary.
